Cat’s Out of the Bag

There's something to be said for the fact that when you spend 40 hours a week sitting in a cube next to someone, they get to know you pretty well. Perhaps that's why my co-worker Lynn figured out my little secret a mere 6 days after I found out. I'm not sure how she came to her conclusion; I certainly didn't think I was letting anything on.

To confirm her suspicions, Lynn and her husband Brent set Michael and me up with an invite to a Friday night dinner at a Casa de Pico. I was concerned, explaining to Michael that Lynn knows me pretty well – definitely well enough to know I'm a sucker for a margarita. He assured me she'd understand if I said I didn't feel like one. I knew it was a sure-fire giveaway.

We didn't even get to that point before the cat was out of the bag. We were visiting in their living room before heading to the restaurant when Brent walked out and announced, "So, pretty big news for you guys, huh?" Michael and I were stunned. He flashed me a look of "What did you tell her?!?" and I flashed back my trademark "I told you so" look. We couldn't keep it together. They knew.

We had been scheming about creative ways to break the news to the grandparents-to-be, so they didn’t even know yet. We got our act together quickly and the rest of the weekend was filled with happy announcements to our family.

Passing the Test

As I stand over a still-sleeping Michael in my rumpled PJs, I ask nervously, "Honey, do you want to get up now?" It's 8:30 on a Sunday morning. Under normal circumstances, he would grunt unhappily and roll over. But today, the sound of the drug-store bag crinkling and cardboard box opening has seeped into his consiousness. He remembers that I bought a pregnancy test last night. He opens his eyes and asks, "Are you pregnant?" I manage a nod before my eyes well up and we both start laughing giddily -- we couldn't be happier! When we finally regain our composure, we share the news with Buster Brown. He grunts unhappily and rolls over.

The best part of waking up.
